Washington, D.C. (February 22, 2010) – Sutherland Asbill & Brennan LLP announces that its Director of Diversity Valerie A. Jackson has been chosen as a recipient of a 2010 Mentor Award by the Public Leadership Education Network (PLEN), a national organization dedicated to preparing women for leadership in the public policy arena. Ms. Jackson will be honored on February 25 during PLEN’s 30th anniversary celebration.
“This is a well-deserved honor for Valerie,” said Sutherland Managing Partner Mark D. Wasserman. “Her efforts to promote diversity extend beyond her leadership of our firm’s initiatives, as exemplified by her active support of PLEN.”
Ms. Jackson serves on PLEN's Corporate Advisory Council, a group of leading business women working alongside PLEN's Board to guide the organization, and speaks at PLEN’s annual Women, Law and Public Policy Seminar.
2010 Mentor Awards also will be presented to the Honorable Judy Biggert, United States House of Representatives, and Susan Scanlan, President of the Women’s Research & Education Institute and Chair of the National Council of Women’s Organizations.
Founded in 1978, PLEN is the only national organization whose sole focus is preparing women for leadership in the public policy arena. Each year, PLEN brings hundreds of women students from colleges and universities across the country to Washington, D.C., to experience first-hand how public policy is shaped and implemented at the national level. PLEN has served close to 6,000 women, of which approximately 35% are women of color or from other populations historically under-represented in public policy leadership.
