Mike Egan is a member of Sutherland’s Tax Practice Group, focusing his practice in the areas of federal taxation and estates and trusts. As an outgrowth of his estate planning work, Mike has also represented clients in connection with the purchase, sale and reorganization of corporations and their assets.
Mike was the chief reporter of an American Law Institute-American Bar Association handbook on the federal estate and gift tax and has taught a course on this subject at Emory University School of Law. Mike has played an active role in rendering tax advice and in resolving controversies with the Internal Revenue Service, including litigation.
Mike served as a Georgia State Representative from 1966-1977 when he resigned to become Associate Attorney General of the United States Department of Justice where he served from 1977-1979. In 1989, he was elected to the State Senate where he chaired the Senate Special Judiciary Committee.
