Michael Sweeney is the co-team leader of Sutherland’s Energy Commodities and Derivatives Practice.

He represents clients in regulatory, policy and transaction matters involving energy and non-energy commodities and derivatives. Michael routinely practices before the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) and before the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC). His clients include multinational oil and gas companies, global energy trading and marketing firms, multi-commodity trading firms, investor-owned utilities and power producers.

Michael is playing a significant role in the energy industry’s response to the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act of 2010 (Dodd- Frank), representing a cross-industry group of energy companies in rulemaking proceedings before the CFTC and other agencies. He also advises energy and non-energy clients on compliance, enforcement and transactional matters relating to the implementation of Title VII of Dodd-Frank.

He has significant experience advising clients on all aspects of FERC regulation, including corporate approvals of mergers and acquisitions, audits and investigations and in the development of comprehensive compliance and risk management programs.
