J.D. Fleming, a member of Sutherland’s Intellectual Property Practice Group, practices primarily in the areas of civil and tax litigation and has substantial trial experience in controversies involving science and technology including patent infringement, trade secrets, industrial technology and federal taxation. He has appeared before local, state and federal trial courts and agencies throughout the country, as well as before the U.S. Courts of Appeals for the First, Fourth, Fifth, Sixth, Seventh, Eleventh, District of Columbia and Federal Circuits.

J.D. taught chemical engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology from 1955 to 1967, rising to the rank of professor, and was research engineer at the Georgia Tech Experiment Station where he conducted research in chemical engineering, metallurgy, ceramics and nuclear engineering. He was also a staff consultant with the Oak Ridge National Laboratory and a consultant to industry and the U.S. Army in the Southeast. J.D. is a registered professional engineer in Georgia (Chemical Engineering) and California (Metallurgy).
