A copyright protects original works of authorship from unauthorized copying or performance. Some examples of authorship subject to copyright protection are writings such as computer software, books, catalogs, advertising copy and certain compilations of information; visual works such as paintings, photographs, prints, maps, technical drawings and fabric designs; performing arts works such as plays, songs and motion pictures; and sound recordings such as records, compact discs and tapes.
