Ryan Weiss counsels clients on the regulatory landscape surrounding the production, trade and movement of physical commodities, including crude oil, petroleum products, renewable fuels and agricultural products. His practice includes advising clients on regulatory issues under the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Mobile Source and Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) programs under the Clean Air Act and the programs of a host of related agencies including the Department of Energy, the Department of Transportation, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, and the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau. Ryan’s practice in this area includes helping companies assess and navigate enforcement issues arising out of the production and transportation of petroleum products and renewable fuels, including all aspects of the RFS and EPA’s gasoline and diesel regulations.
Ryan also advises clients on a wide range of international trade matters. He represents clients in trade remedies cases and advises clients on compliance strategies, internal investigations and other issues arising under U.S. export control and sanctions laws. In addition, as a member of Sutherland’s nuclear energy practice, Ryan advises on export, regulatory and compliance issues.
Prior to joining Sutherland as an associate, Ryan participated in the firm’s 2013 Summer Associate program. His past experience also includes working as a controls engineer for a major automotive supplier.
