Paul Sinnott is regularly recognized as a leading commodities lawyer in both the physical and derivatives markets. He represents energy and metals industry clients, ranging from leading investment and financing banks, institutional dealers, traders, producers, shipowners and P&I clubs.

Co-Partner in Charge of Sutherland’s London office and a founding partner of Arbis LLP, “Paul Sinnott is ‘commercial, solutions oriented’ and recommended” (Legal 500 2010, Commodity Physicals), and “is ‘very good at derivatives work’ especially in the energy sector” (Chambers & Partners 2014, Commodity Derivatives).

He advises clients on:

  • Commodity trade finance (covering both physical and derivative business)
  • Commodity sales and storage (oil, coal, metals, gas and power)
  • Carriage by sea (charterparties, bills of lading, COAs)
  • OTC and on exchange derivatives (commodities, freight, FX and interest rate) including customization/negotiation of both standard form and bespoke master netting, margining, and deal documentation
  • Derivatives regulation (e.g., EMIR, MiFID)
  • Compliance issues (e.g., market abuse, economic sanctions, bribery laws)

Paul regularly advises on both physical and paper trading transactions, including attendant financing, security, credit, and shipping arrangements.

He also has extensive experience in all forms and stages of dispute resolution, and is regularly involved in high value claims in the trading, financing and shipping markets. On behalf of major banks and leading traders, Paul has been involved in high value derivatives litigation as well as litigation related to the early termination of numerous substantial trading books.

Paul trained at a London maritime firm, and previously worked within a Derivatives Group at a major US investment bank. He speaks fluent French and routinely works out of the Geneva Office.
