Joel E. Hoffman

Of Counsel

Joel founded and served as lead partner in Eversheds Sutherland (US)'s FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) practice for 15 years.

In his current role as Of Counsel, he remains available to consult with and advise clients on FDA-related matters. A member of Eversheds Sutherland (US)'s Litigation practice group, Joel represented large and small manufacturers and their trade associations in all industries regulated by the FDA, as well as national organizations in the medical and pharmacy professions on both FDA and related antitrust matters. Joel served as lead counsel in many landmark cases in both trial and appellate courts, including the U.S. Supreme Court, and participated in shaping several important pieces of federal legislation enforced by the FDA.

Joel began his career in the Antitrust Division of the U.S. Department of Justice, handling both antitrust appeals and administrative law cases that involved defending a variety of major federal regulatory agencies. Since then his focus has primarily been on FDA regulatory law. Upon his retirement from full-time practice, Joel was awarded the Distinguished Service and Leadership Award of the Food and Drug Law Institute.

He has spoken at many conferences sponsored by the Food and Drug Law Institute and the American Bar Association, and has written numerous articles for the Food and Drug Law Journal, The Business Lawyer (published by the ABA Section of Business Law) and the Administrative Law Review (published by the ABA Section of Administrative Law and Regulatory Practice).
