Barrett Hawks counsels clients on conflict management and serves as a full-time independent mediator and arbitrator. His 50 years of experience as a lawyer includes litigation, conflict management and transactions for business clients. This breadth of experience gives him a keen advantage in understanding the nature of conflicts and a unique ability to relate to the parties and their concerns. Using active listening and perceptive questioning, he is able to help parties more realistically evaluate their positions. He brings to each matter a passion for expeditious and efficient resolution and is effective in promoting productive outcomes for all parties.
A member of Sutherland’s Energy Practice Group for many years, Barrett represented electric utilities and other electric industry participants in a wide array of transactional matters including mergers and acquisitions, joint ventures and finance. Now, as a mediator certified by the International Institute for Conflict Prevention and Resolution and the American Arbitration Association, Barrett works with electric cooperatives, utilities and other businesses to resolve conflicts over rates, allocation of costs, debt restructurings, merger and acquisition transactions, joint ventures, power purchase contracts and other contract matters.
