Jones joins Sutherland after serving as Tax Assistant to the Solicitor General at the U.S. Department of Justice since 1990. During his years in the Solicitor General's office, which included an earlier stint from 1978 to 1980, Jones argued forty-three cases before the U.S. Supreme Court and participated in eleven cases before various United States Courts of Appeals.
