LONDON (October 31, 2008) – Sutherland Senior International Counsel Alvin J. Shuttleworth presented at The Lawyer Conference “Building Business Value Through Compliance," where he provided an address on “Getting the Board’s Attention and Full Buy-in" as part of the two-day conference addressing how companies can meet compliance challenges and goals. Mr. Shuttleworth’s presentation focused on roles of in-house advisers and external legal services providers and comparisons in formulating and implementing compliance systems, including combined code requirements.
This inaugural conference brought together senior counsel from 17 corporations to share how they have developed and implemented value-added compliance programs.
Mr. Shuttleworth, based in the United Kingdom, advises clients on a full range of international matters. Before joining Sutherland, he was Group Legal Director and Company Secretary of British Nuclear Fuels plc (BNFL). As BNFL Group Legal Director, he led group initiatives in all major areas, including mergers and acquisitions, litigation, environmental, energy operations, safety and insurance.
Mr. Shuttleworth is a member of the board of the International Nuclear Lawyers Association and Vice Chairman of EMANI. He is a member of the Law Society, the representative body for solicitors in England and Wales, for which he formerly served as chairman of the Commerce and Industry Group, and is a member of the Commerce and Industry NW Executive. Before joining BNFL, he worked for Warrington & Runcorn Development Corp.
