WASHINGTON (May 3, 2002) – Sutherland Asbill & Brennan's Washington litigation partner Lovida Hardin Coleman, Jr. has been elected to the Executive Committee of The RAND Corporation, a nonprofit institution that helps improve policy and decision-making through research and analysis. Ms. Coleman has served on RAND's Board of Trustees since 1997 and is Chair of the Audit Committee.
RAND, the first organization to be called a "think tank," was founded after World War II to assist in strategic planning for the Air Force. Since then, it has substantially expanded its expertise to all branches of the U.S. military community and to international and social issues, especially health policy. RAND's main office is located in Santa Monica, CA. It also has offices in Pittsburgh, PA, New York, NY and the Washington, D.C. area. RAND Europe is headquartered in Leiden, The Netherlands, with other offices in Berlin, Germany and Cambridge, England.
Immediately prior to joining Sutherland, Ms. Coleman was Deputy General Counsel to the Bush-Quayle '92 re-election campaign and Director of Domestic Policy Issues. She also was Deputy Independent Counsel to James C. McKay and a Fellow at the Institute of Politics, John F. Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University, teaching a course on white collar crime.
Between 1977 and 1980, she served at the Department of Justice as Special Assistant to the Attorney General and Special Assistant to the Deputy Attorney General of the United States, where she acted as liaison with the Criminal Division and office of the Solicitor General. She has tried cases as a Special Assistant United States Attorney and argued appeals for the Criminal Division.
Ms. Coleman is a member of the American Law Institute; Secretary of Treasury's Bank Secrecy Act Advisory Group; Board of Directors of the Council for Excellence in Government; Board of the Washington Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights and Urban Affairs; and the Committee on Pro Se Litigation of the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia.
