ATLANTA (February 16, 2005) – Sutherland Asbill & Brennan is pleased to announce that Charles T. Lester, Jr. has been awarded the Elbert P. TuttleAward for his outstanding civic activities and dedication to justice by the Anti-Defamation League, Southeast Region at its 8th Annual Jurisprudence Luncheon on Thursday, April 7, 2005.
The Elbert P. Tuttle Jurisprudence Award was established to recognize individuals in the legal community who best exemplify the Anti-Defamation League's mission to secure justice and fair treatment for all people. Elbert Tuttle, a founding partner of Sutherland, was a judge on the United States Court of Appeals. He handed down key rulings in many important civil rights issues and under his leadership, the court acted to desegregate schools, buses and other public accommodations.
As Co-Chair of the firms' Bar and Public Service Committee, Mr. Lester devotes much of his time to pro bono work. As Past President of the State Bar of Georgia, he was a founder and Co-Chair of the State Bar's Diversity Program. He has also been President of the Atlanta Legal Aid, an officer and director of Georgia Legal Services, member of the Chief Justice Commission on Indigent Defense, and a Co-Chair of the Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law.
Mr. Lester has been recognized for his pro bono work and service by receipt of the State Bar of Georgia Distinguished Service Award, the H. Sol Clark Pro Bono Service Award, and the Women and Minorities in the Profession Committee Commitment to Equality Award.
