NEW YORK (April 28, 2010) – Sutherland Asbill & Brennan LLP announces its Partner Michael B. Koffler is a recipient of the 2010 Burton Awards for Legal Achievement for his article "Six Degrees of Separation: Principles to Guide The Regulation of Broker-Dealers and Investment Advisers" published by BNA’s Securities Regulation & Law Report last April. The competition is open to the nation’s 1,000 largest and most prestigious law firms, and only 30 winners are selected.
A partner of Sutherland’s Financial Services Practice Group, Mr. Koffler’s article analyzes the key differences between the activities of broker-dealers and investment advisers and underscores the public policy implications of these differences on any future attempt to harmonize the regulation of these two industries.
“I congratulate Michael on this much deserved award," said Stephen E. Roth, Sutherland’s Financial Services Practice Group Leader. “His article provides valuable insights as to how the proposed legislation can be effective by recognizing the differences between the activities of broker-dealers and investment advisors."
Mr. Koffler focuses his practice on the investment adviser and broker-dealer industries. He works on securities issues associated with the management and distribution of investment products by financial institutions, including investment advisers, wirehouses, banks, independent broker-dealers and insurance companies.
The Burton Awards for Legal Achievement was established to select the finest law firm and law school authors and has since expanded into other areas of the law. The program is a non-profit academic effort. The Eleventh Anniversary Burton Awards event will be held at the Library of Congress on June 14, 2010. The prominent guest speakers this year include Supreme Court Justice Ruth Ginsburg; Author Bryan Garner; and senior analyst for CNN Worldwide and author of The Nine: Inside the Secret World of the Supreme Court, Jeffrey Toobin. Bill Press will be the Master of Ceremonies.
