WASHINGTON (December 12, 2011) – Sutherland Asbill & Brennan LLP Partner Thomas R. Bundy, III was selected as a founding member of the DC Bar Foundation’s new Young Lawyers Network (YLN) initiative. This new nine-attorney team is tasked with furthering the primary goal of the Foundation, which is increasing access to legal services for the District’s underserved. As the first YLN class, they will create a sustainable framework for young lawyers to participate in the Foundation’s work.
The DC Bar Foundation is the leading private funder of civil legal services in Washington, D.C. Members of the YLN must be under 40 years of age when inducted and commit to a two-year tenure. In its prime, the YLN will have approximately 30 members, who will serve as ambassadors to engage other young attorneys in the cause.
“Sutherland is very proud of Thomas’ appointment to the DC Bar Foundation’s Young Lawyers Network," said Partner Judith A. O’Brien, who heads the firm’s Pro Bono and Public Service Committee. “He possesses the kind of leadership qualities required to successfully cultivate a new project from the ground up." Ms. O’Brien added that the firm regularly recognizes him for logging more than 100 pro bono hours of service each year through programs at Sutherland and beyond.
Mr. Bundy has been a member of Sutherland’s Litigation Practice Group since 2000, and he was named a partner in 2007. Mr. Bundy is actively involved in advancing the firm’s diversity goals and oversees initiatives such as Sutherland Scholars, a 10-week program that provides local undergraduate students with an opportunity to prepare for law school.
Along with a team of Sutherland lawyers, Mr. Bundy was awarded the “Outstanding Achievement Award" by the Washington Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights and Urban Affairs for his representation of seven deaf individuals who were denied interpretative services at a local hospital. Mr. Bundy negotiated the entry of a consent decree that required the hospital to provide appropriate auxiliary aids and services to patients and patients’ companions who are deaf or hard of hearing. A new national standard for effective communication in a hospital setting resulted from the case.
When not representing pro bono clients, Mr. Bundy devotes his time to other local organizations, including: the Hearing Committee for the Board on Professional Responsibility for the District of Columbia, the Young Lawyers Section for The Bar Association for the District of Columbia, and the High Tech Subcommittee for the Labor and Employment Section of The Bar Association for the District of Columbia.
