Sutherland Partner Lewis S. Wiener Elected Co-Chair of the Board of Directors for the Washington Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights and Urban Affairs

December 10, 2012

WASHINGTON (December 10, 2012) – Sutherland Asbill & Brennan LLP is pleased to announce that Lewis S. Wiener, a partner in the firm’s Litigation Practice Group, has been elected Co-Chair of the Board of Directors for the Washington Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights and Urban Affairs.

Mr. Wiener has been a board member since 2003. In 2011, he received the Washington Lawyers’ Committee’s “Outstanding Achievement Award" in the area of disability rights for spearheading a landmark settlement on behalf of a deaf couple who were denied sign language interpreter services in violation of the Americans with Disabilities Act and the Rehabilitation Act.

“Sutherland is proud of its ongoing partnership with the Washington Lawyers’ Committee," said Mark D. Wasserman, Sutherland’s Managing Partner. “Lew is the perfect candidate for the role of Co-Chair. As a leading advocate for the organization, he understands its mission and has worked hard over the years to successfully defend the civil rights of protected groups. We congratulate Lew on his new appointment."

Mr. Wiener is a corporate defense attorney at Sutherland with 25 years of trial and advocacy experience and represents banks, credit card companies, consumer finance companies and insurance companies in financial services litigation in state and federal courts throughout the United States. His vast commercial litigation and trial experience includes serving as class action defense and arbitration counsel. He also represents clients in eminent domain/inverse condemnation and land use litigation before state and federal courts.

“I am thrilled to take on this exciting and challenging opportunity," said Mr. Wiener. “I have worked closely with the Washington Lawyers’ Committee for a number of years as both a board member and litigator. I look forward to continuing to advance its very worthy cause and build on the successes that we have achieved over the years. This is another example of Sutherland’s long standing commitment to pro bono and service to our community."

Sutherland and the Washington Lawyers’ Committee have a long-standing relationship, partnering on numerous civil rights cases and pro bono projects. The Washington Lawyers’ Committee was first established in 1968 to provide pro bono legal services to address discrimination and entrenched poverty in the Washington, D.C., community. Over the past 40 years, the Committee’s efforts and programs have expanded from a small staff focused primarily on issues of racial discrimination into a far larger organization providing pro bono representation in a broad range of civil rights and related poverty issues impacting every group protected by federal, state and local civil rights laws.
