ATLANTA (April 28, 2004) – Sutherland Asbill & Brennan LLP is pleased to announce that Charles T. Lester, Jr., a firm Partner and an Emory School of Law graduate (Class of 1967), will be presented with the Emory Law School Distinguished Alumni Award by the Emory Law Alumni Association. The presentation ceremony will take place at the Four Seasons Hotel Atlanta on the evening of Friday, May 7, 2004.
The Award recognizes distinguished service to Emory Law School and Emory University, an outstanding commitment to public and community service, and distinguished achievements in legal practice. Emory typically honors four alumni with this award each year.
Mr. Lester is an outstanding member of the Emory community. As a graduate of the College and Law School, he chaired the Annual Giving Fund at Emory Law School, and served on the Law School Council. His commitment to public interest is unwavering. He was President of the Atlanta Legal Aid Society, Inc., Treasurer for Georgia Indigent Legal Services, and on the Board of Georgia Legal Services Program. He co-founded, with his law school classmate, Marvin Arrington, the Diversity Program of the State Bar of Georgia. Nationally, Lester served as a Co-Chair of the Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights Under Law from 1999 to 2001.
Mr. Lester's contributions to the legal profession are unparalleled. He served as President of the State Bar of Georgia from 1991 to 1992, President of the Younger Lawyers Section from 1977 to 1978, and served on the Bar's Executive Committee from 1977 to 1979 and from 1987 to 1993. He serves on the Chief Justice's Commission on Indigent Defense, is a Fellow of the American and Georgia Bar Foundations, and is a member of the Atlanta Judicial Circuit Public Defender Selection Panel. Mr. Lester is a member of Leadership Atlanta, class of 1981. He served as President of the Lawyers Club of Atlanta from 1988 to 1989.
Mr. Lester' awards include the State Bar of Georgia's Distinguished Service Award in 1987, the H. Sol Clark Pro Bono Service award in 1989, and the Women and Minorities in the Profession Committee Commitment to Equality Award in 2004. He was selected as a 2004 Georgia Super Lawyer in a survey conducted by Atlanta Magazine, and was named one of Georgia's "Legal Elite: Georgia's Most Effective Lawyers," in a survey conducted by Georgia Trend in 2003.
