Sutherland Moves to LEED Certified Building, Continues Smart Growth

June 1, 2010

HOUSTON (June 1, 2010) – Today, the Houston office of Sutherland Asbill & Brennan LLP relocated to First City Tower, the first building to be Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (“LEED") certified in Houston.  The move supports Sutherland’s sustainability program and follows the agreement of the Houston office to purchase renewable energy certificates from Element Markets in order to offset the office’s energy use.

Now located on the 37th and 38th floors of 1001 Fannin Street, the Houston office encompasses a space of approximately 41,000 square feet. The firm worked with architects and designers to pursue LEED 2009 Interior Design and Construction certification for the actual office space, which includes low-flow plumbing fixtures, lighting controls with occupancy sensors and timers, ENERGY STAR rated equipment throughout the office, high content recycled materials, air conditioning zones and an indoor air quality management system.  During construction of the space, more than 50% of waste was sorted to recycling centers to be redirected into new materials.

“The move to a LEED certified building was very important to us," said Paul B. Turner, Co-Partner in Charge of the Houston office and member of the firm’s Energy and Environmental Practice Group. “That we were able to pursue LEED certification for the interior design and construction of the office space as well is a testament to our continued commitment to the Houston community and in looking for innovative and efficient ways to work and serve our clients."

“We look forward to continued smart growth in our Houston office and within our key practice groups," said Rachel Giesber Clingman, Co-Partner in Charge of the Houston office and member of the firm’s Executive Committee.  “The move to First City Tower gives us physical space to allow us to grow strategically to best serve our clients."

Sutherland’s Houston office opened in 2002 with a single lawyer. The Houston office has expanded significantly over the last several years and now includes 23 attorneys practicing in the Corporate, Energy and Environmental, and Litigation practice areas.
