WASHINGTON (May 13, 2009) – Sutherland Asbill & Brennan LLP, a law firm with five offices across the United States and a global client base, announced today that its attorney- and employee-driven program to advance the cause of environmental sustainability reached a new milestone. The firm purchased renewable energy to match 100% of its estimated regular electricity purchases from conventional energy sources.
Sterling Planet, the nation’s leading retail provider of renewable energy certificates (RECs) and a client of Sutherland with respect to the development of renewable energy projects, is supplying Sutherland with 7,200,000 kilowatt-hours of renewable energy from qualifying facilities nationwide. The purchase represents enough electricity to power 568 average U.S. homes for a full year and offset approximately 9.8 million pounds of carbon dioxide, a key greenhouse gas.
The environmental benefit of Sutherland’s purchase is equivalent to the carbon that a 3,667-acre fir forest could offset in one year, taking 958 cars off the road for a year, or recycling 1,582 tons of waste rather than dumping it in a landfill.
“Since Sutherland’s founding in 1924, our firm has been deeply committed to being a good steward of resources in the communities in which we live and work," says Mark D. Wasserman, Sutherland’s managing partner. “Our purchase of renewable energy certificates is one important effort to further advance that commitment."
“We applaud Sutherland for adopting sustainable business practices and supporting renewable energy," said Mel Jones, Sterling Planet President and CEO. “Sutherland is a leader among law firms, and the first in our client base. Clearly, Sutherland recognizes there is a significant payback for use of renewable energy, both in terms of the environment and also in supporting electricity production from domestic sources. This ‘made in the USA’ energy is good for domestic economies and contributes to greater energy independence for our nation."
Sterling Planet is supplying Green America™ RECs. Certification by the Green-e Energy program of the Center for Resource Solutions (CRS) ensures the highest levels of authenticity and transparency and the satisfaction of stringent environmental guidelines. CRS is a national nonprofit organization working to promote sustainable resource solutions that reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
