ATLANTA (October 8, 2009) – Sutherland Asbill & Brennan LLP will host ServeHAITI’s annual fund-raiser at 7 p.m. on Saturday, October 17, 2009, at its offices located at 999 Peachtree Street, NE. ServeHAITI is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, faith-based organization working together with the people of Grand-Bois, Haiti, to achieve a better quality of life. ServeHAITI provides medical care and treatment to people residing in the mountains of Haiti through the operation of a medical facility and a water purification program.
The event will include the Haitian Artisans’ Market, a silent auction and the Atlanta premiere of the award-winning 10-minute documentary “Defining Dignity: The People of Haiti" by Tim Kane. All the proceeds will benefit St. Vincent de Paul Health Center in Grand-Bois, Haiti. Tickets can be purchased in advance for $40 per person or $65 per couple. Tickets will be sold at the door for $50 per person, $75 per couple. For more information and to purchase tickets for the event, visit ServeHAITI.org.
“After working with ServeHAITI for more than a decade, I have learned the importance of its service," said Sutherland Partner and ServeHAITI’s Treasurer and Board of Directors Member Peter J. Anderson. “When we first began ServeHAITI, the residents were living in the 19th Century; they didn’t have running water, electricity or indoor plumbing. This organization has built a medical clinic and has provided clean water and purification systems to the residents." With the support of his Sutherland partners, Mr. Anderson travels to Haiti 5 to 6 weeks each year to work at the medical facility.
In 2001, ServeHAITI hired a physician from Port-au-Prince to run a M.A.S.H-like triage unit. The physician visited a couple of weeks each month; however, ServeHAITI quickly learned a more permanent facility was needed. In 2005, the first medical clinic was established. Today, the clinic has doubled in size and houses hospital and isolation beds, a laboratory, and four exam and delivery rooms.
“Despite our success in building the medical facility, the need for health care is much greater than our current resources," said Mr. Anderson. “We constantly ask ourselves ‘are we better served to care for one patient or should we ration the money?’ We’ve committed to do our best for each patient and hope additional funding and resources will come. This fund-raising event will put us on the right path to achieving our goals."
In addition to medical treatment, ServeHAITI is creating a new way of life through educational programs, focusing on the importance of clean water, nutrition and general health. These programs also raise the awareness of the medical facility, which delivers approximately one child per day and treats at least one malnourished child per week.
