The following attorneys have been promoted:
Carmen L. Brun is a member of Sutherland’s Litigation Practice Group and the Securities Regulatory, Enforcement, and White Collar Litigation Practice Team. She represents broker-dealers and individuals in regulatory and enforcement matters involving the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA), the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), and State Securities Commissions, as well as in FINRA arbitrations. She has also represented corporate and individual clients in a variety of other matters, including tax controversy, trade secrets misappropriation, employment discrimination and class-action insurance defense. Ms. Brun is located in Sutherland’s Washington, D.C., office.
Matthew O. Gatewood is a member of Sutherland’s Litigation Practice Group and the Crisis Management and Complex Litigation Team. He focuses primarily on resolving conflicts encountered by the firm’s energy and transportation clients. In addition to traditional litigation in federal and state courts, Mr. Gatewood has advised clients facing investigations from Congress, Presidential-appointed task forces and state agencies. He is located in Sutherland’s Washington, D.C., office.
Stephanie E. Kinzel-Tapper is a member of Sutherland’s Litigation Practice Group and focuses her practice on complex energy and business litigation matters. Her cases have involved a variety of claims, including breach of contract, fraud, deceptive trade practices and breach of fiduciary duty. She has litigated claims arising from a variety of U.S. and international contractual arrangements, including crude oil trading agreements, data acquisition and use agreements, joint operating agreements, oil and gas leases, and partnership and joint venture agreements. Ms. Kinzel-Tapper is located in Sutherland’s Houston office.
Melissa A. McGoogan is a member of Sutherland’s Energy and Environmental Practice Group and focuses her practice on advising clients on a wide variety of commercial transactions for energy commodities trading firms, including the trading, storage and marketing of crude oil and refined petroleum products and structured strategic arrangements. Ms. McGoogan has represented clients in the negotiation and structuring of crude oil, refined products and renewable fuel purchase and sale transactions; renewable identification number (RIN) trading documentation; refinery supply and offtake agreements; monetization of inventory transactions; credit facilitation projects; crude oil tolling arrangements; terminalling, throughput and transportation agreements; and arrangements for optimization of logistics and infrastructure assets. Ms. McGoogan is located in Sutherland’s Washington, D.C., office.
Troy L. Olsen is a member of Sutherland’s Tax Practice Group and focuses his practice on resolving tax controversy matters and representing tax-exempt organizations. His tax controversy practice includes representing clients before the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) in audit, appeals, collection and other administrative matters and in tax litigation. He has represented clients in the U.S. Tax Court, U.S. District and Appellate Courts, and U.S. Court of Federal Claims. Mr. Olsen’s exempt-organization practice includes assisting organizations with obtaining, maintaining and reinstating tax-exempt status with the IRS; corporate philanthropy planning; and issues relating to exempt status, charitable contributions and giving, and employment tax matters. Before joining Sutherland, Mr. Olsen worked for the IRS in Washington, D.C., as an attorney-advisor for the Taxpayer Advocate Service where he advised the National Taxpayer Advocate on legal and procedural issues, with particular emphasis on issues relating to business taxpayers, tax-exempt organizations and the IRS Office of Appeals. He is located in Sutherland’s Washington, D.C., office.
Aaron M. Payne is a member of Sutherland’s Tax Practice Group focusing on federal taxation, corporate taxation, and international tax planning and transactions. He has experience analyzing and structuring transactions, including domestic and international mergers, acquisitions and reorganizations. He also advises clients on subpart F planning, repatriation techniques and foreign currency transactions. Mr. Payne is located in Sutherland’s Washington, D.C., office.
Owen J. Pinkerton counsels a variety of public and private issuers and underwriters on a range of regulatory and transactional matters, including public and private offerings, and ongoing regulatory compliance with the federal securities laws. In particular, he frequently advises business development companies (BDCs), including publicly registered, non-traded BDCs and publicly registered commodity pools. Mr. Pinkerton’s practice also involves ongoing regulatory advice on general corporate governance matters, including preparing and reviewing periodic reports under the Securities Exchange Act of 1934 and dealing with disclosure issues under the federal securities laws. He also advises clients on issues arising under state “Blue Sky" laws and processes and FINRA regulation of public offerings. Mr. Pinkerton is located in Sutherland’s Washington, D.C., office.
Jeffrey N. Starkey is a member of Sutherland’s Tax Practice Group focusing primarily on federal tax controversy and federal tax litigation. He advises clients on a wide range of issues associated with their general business activities and financial transactions. Mr. Starkey represents clients in all phases of administrative controversy, including examination, administrative appeals and the submission of refund claims. He has litigated cases in the U.S. Tax Court, the U.S. Court of Federal Claims and U.S. District Court. He is located in Sutherland’s Washington, D.C., office.
