Sutherland Continues to Expand IP Practice, Adds Three IP Litigation Lateral Associates

January 11, 2005

WASHINGTON (January 11, 2005) – Sutherland Asbill & Brennan LLP announced that it is continuing to expand the firm's Intellectual Property Practice in its Washington, D.C. office with the addition of three lateral associates.  David E. Weslow, Charles J. Hawkins and Christina A. Ondrick primarily focus their practices on intellectual property litigation.

Sutherland's rapidly growing Intellectual Property Litigation Group represents national and multinational companies involved in high-stakes, high-profile litigation regarding a broad spectrum of technologies.  Its litigators have proven experience in patent, trademark, copyright and other related litigation matters and have successfully handled intellectual property jury trials throughout the United States.

Mr. Hawkins has assisted with intellectual property litigation involving utility patent, design patent and trade dress infringement and has been involved in matters at all stages of litigation.  Prior to attending law school, he spent several years as a petroleum engineer with Chevron USA.  At Chevron, Mr. Hawkins' primary responsibility was to maximize oil production in a heavy oil steam flood through active heat management.  He was also responsible for coordinating the calculation and classification of the remaining petroleum reserves estimates for the Kern River field, and presenting those results to the company's formal reserves committee.  Mr. Hawkins received his J.D., magna cum laude, from American University, Washington College of Law in 2003 and his B.S. in Petroleum Engineering from Pennsylvania State University in 1997.

Ms. Ondrick concentrates her practice on intellectual property litigation, complex commercial litigation, and client counseling.  Her litigation experience includes patent and trademark infringement actions and commercial litigation involving antitrust, unfair competition, employment discrimination and other complex commercial matters in federal and Virginia state courts.  Her client counseling experience includes patent prosecution with an emphasis on the chemical and mechanical arts as well as advising clients on various patent related matters.  Prior to joining the firm, she worked as an oil, gas and petroleum engineer performing risk assessment surveys of chemical, petrochemical and utility companies, and advised clients on risk reduction.  Ms. Ondrick received her J.D., magna cum laude and Order of the Coif from the University of Pittsburgh School of Law in 2000 and her B.S. in Chemical Engineering from West Virginia University in 1994.

Mr. Weslow focuses his practice on litigation, prosecution, counseling, and licensing of trademarks, copyrights, and domain names, as well as patent litigation.  He assists clients in selecting and protecting trademarks in the U.S. and abroad, including defense and prosecution of trademark opposition and cancellation proceedings, policing the use of trademarks by third parties, and acquisition and defense of domain names.  He is frequently involved in managing discovery and preparing pleadings and motions for U.S. district court and trademark trial and appeal board actions.  Mr. Weslow received his J.D., with honors, from the University of Maryland School of Law in 2001 and his B.A. from Elon College in 1997.

Mr. Hawkins and Ms. Ondrick were most recently associates at the Northern Virginia office of Pillsbury Winthrop LLP; Mr. Weslow was an associate with Staas & Halsey LLP in Washington, DC.
