Sutherland Brings On Prominent Criminal Defense Attorney Billy Martin

February 26, 2007

WASHINGTON (February 26, 2007) – Sutherland Asbill & Brennan LLP announces that prominent trial attorney Billy Martin has joined the firm.  Lawyer to corporate executives, professional athletes, entertainers, politicians, and local and foreign governments, Mr. Martin will head Sutherland’s white collar criminal defense practice.

"We are very excited to have Billy Martin join us," said Mark D. Wasserman, Sutherland's managing partner.  "Not only is he one of the best criminal defense lawyers in the country, he is also at home in the boardroom and has handled significant civil trials for corporations and executives.  Very few lawyers are as adept as he is in both criminal and civil litigation."

A former federal prosecutor and senior official at the Department of Justice who has been in private practice since 1990, Mr. Martin is best known for representing high-profile clients in a wide range of matters.  This includes defending former Atlanta Mayor Bill Campbell in his highly- publicized public corruption trial and basketball player Jayson Williams in an alleged manslaughter case.  On the civil side, Mr. Martin has represented large corporations in complex class actions and other civil trials.  Mr. Martin has also handled cases for other athletes, including then Philadelphia 76er Allen Iverson, former Washington Wizards Juwan Howard and Rod Strickland, and boxer Riddick Bowe.  Mr. Martin represented Monica Lewinsky and her mother, Marcia Lewis, as well as the parents of murdered Washington intern Chandra Levy.  Currently, Mr. Martin represents actor Wesley Snipes, who is under criminal indictment for tax fraud.

"Billy’s practice melds extremely well with other aspects of our litigation practice," said Litigation Partner Richard G. Murphy, Jr.  "With his experience as both a civil and criminal litigator, he can provide counsel on a wide variety of subject matters and will help us to continue to grow as head of our white collar group."

In the civil litigation context Mr. Martin has handled cases involving allegations of financial fraud, improper employment practices and civil rights violations.  He has substantial jury trial experience representing clients in connection with criminal and civil investigations and other civil litigation.

Mr. Martin will join Sutherland’s Litigation Practice Group, which already comprises several prominent criminal defense lawyers, including Lovida H. Coleman Jr., Hamilton P. Fox III and Daniel Marino in Washington, and former federal prosecutor Jennifer M. Moore in New York, among others.

"There are many reasons why Sutherland makes sense for me," said Mr. Martin.  "From the firm’s significant presence in Washington and Atlanta, to its preeminent tax practice-a plus since many of my high-profile matters involve tax issues-to its strong securities, financial services and litigation practices, my move to Sutherland is perfect for my practice. I am very excited about being here."
