Sutherland Attorneys Named Among Top Tax Advisers Worldwide

October 5, 2012

ATLANTA and WASHINGTON (October 5, 2012) – Sutherland Asbill & Brennan LLP attorneys N. Jerold Cohen and Jerome B. Libin have been named among the top tax advisers in the world by World Tax, a sister publication of International Tax Review.

In its 19th edition, World Tax is the only publication of its kind to focus on leaders for tax advice around the world, covering more than 70 jurisdictions.  Mr. Cohen and Mr. Libin were recognized as leaders in Tax Controversy law. Sutherland also was ranked as a Tier 2 law firm, in recognition of having an international network and leading reputation in the United States.

“Congratulations to Jerry Cohen and Jerry Libin, both of whom are well-deserving of this recognition," said Mark D. Wasserman, Sutherland’s Managing Partner. “It is always a great honor when clients and peers recognize talent and dedication."

Sutherland’s tax practice constitutes one of the largest and most highly regarded tax practices in the country, representing many of the world's largest and most prominent corporations - including more than 35 of the Fortune 100 - in every industry and in virtually every area of tax law on the federal, international, state and local levels.

Mr. Cohen represents a number of U.S. and foreign clients in all aspects of domestic and international tax planning and controversy matters. In 1979, Jerry was appointed by President Carter to serve as Chief Counsel for the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), a position he held until 1981. Today, he has successfully litigated federal and state tax cases and has handled numerous matters before the IRS, state revenue departments, and the U. S. Department of the Treasury.

Mr. Libin is Chair of Sutherland's Tax Practice Group and handles matters involving virtually every aspect of domestic and international corporate taxation for a broad range of U.S. and foreign clients. He has extensive experience in dealing with the U.S. Department of the Treasury in matters such as the revision of proposed regulations and the negotiation of tax treaty provisions. As a consultant to the American Law Institute International Tax Study Project, Jerry participated in the development of a number of international tax proposals that became part of the Internal Revenue Code of 1986. He has also served as an informal adviser to the staff of the U.S. Senate Finance Committee.
