Sutherland Attorney Voted President-Elect of Georgia Association of Black Women Attorneys

January 13, 2010

ATLANTA (January 13, 2010) –  Jamala S. McFadden, an attorney in the Atlanta office of Sutherland Asbill & Brennan LLP, has been voted president-elect of the Georgia Association of Black Women Attorneys (GABWA) for the 2010 calendar year. Her presidential term, which begins in 2011, marks GABWA’s 30th anniversary.

Ms. McFadden has been an active member of GABWA since moving to Atlanta in 2003.  She has served GABWA in various leadership capacities, including vice president and member-at-large. For four years, she served as chair of the Glitter Gala and Auction, GABWA’s signature fund-raising event.  In 2009, Ms. McFadden chaired GABWA’s annual judicial reception, hosted by Sutherland, honoring Chief Judges Julie E. Carnes (Northern District of Georgia) and M. Yvette Miller (Court of Appeals of Georgia).

“I am excited and honored to serve as president-elect of such a dynamic organization," said Ms. McFadden.  “This year will be one of preparation for 2011 as GABWA celebrates 30 years of serving the needs and interests of black women attorneys, advocating for women and children, and empowering our communities. As president in 2011, I look forward to preparing GABWA for the charge of the next 30 years by focusing on relationship building, expanding GABWA’s presence and impact throughout Georgia, and nurturing expert practitioners, judges, politicians, scholars and leaders."  In electing Ms. McFadden, GABWA’s membership supported her basic campaign message:  “There is no stopping a galvanized GABWA!"

Ms. McFadden is a member of Sutherland’s Litigation Practice Group. Her practice focuses on complex business litigation and employment litigation.  She received her law degree from the University of Michigan where she was an executive editor of the Michigan Law Review and chair of the Black Law Students’ Alliance.  Ms. McFadden has one son, Jamal.

GABWA was founded in 1981 by a group of African American women who desired to form a voluntary bar organization that would focus on women and children’s issues, increase black female representation in the judiciary and in public offices, and take a proactive stance on political issues. Today, GABWA has an active membership of approximately 500 women and men who strive each day to fulfill the organization’s mission: to nurture, support and galvanize the power of black women attorneys, advocate for women and children, and empower the community.
