Sutherland Attorney Alfred A. (Al) Lindseth Co-Authors Schoolhouses, Courthouses, and Statehouses, Published By Princeton University Press

June 17, 2009

ATLANTA (June 17, 2009) – Although the school year has ended in many districts, the debate over the future of public education continues.

Alfred A. (Al) Lindseth, an attorney of Sutherland Asbill & Brennan LLP and longtime litigator in the area of education law, joined economist Eric A. Hanushek in writing a book addressing strategies and solutions for reforming American public schools. Schoolhouses, Courthouses, and Statehouses: Solving the Funding-Achievement Puzzle in America's Public Schools, published by Princeton University Press, is now available in book stores.

“The book discusses how to create an integrated education and funding system that encourages, promotes and rewards good decision-making by educators at all levels," said Mr. Lindseth. “Now more than ever, we need to stretch every dollar we can. Our book outlines how education can be reformed without requiring additional budget dollars."

Mr. Lindseth has earned a national reputation representing and advising state and local school authorities in the resolution of complex disputes involving their obligations under state and federal constitutions. For the past 25 years, he has worked closely with lawyers from the offices of the State Attorney General in states as diverse as New York, California, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri and North Dakota in important school finance and educational adequacy cases bringing them to conclusions through litigation, negotiations, legislative action or a combination of strategies. As a result of these representations, Mr. Lindseth has a deep understanding of the wide range of legal, social science, economic and education issues arising in such cases, as well as the expert witnesses typically involved in them, many of whom he has encountered in more than one case.

Dr. Hanushek is the Paul and Jean Hanna Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution of Stanford University and has been a leader in the development of economic analysis of educational issues. His research spans the most important areas of education policy including the impact on achievement of teacher quality, high-stakes accountability, and class size reduction. His pioneering analysis measuring teacher quality on the basis of student achievement forms the foundation for current research into the value of teachers and schools. His work on efficiency and resource usage is central to current debates about school finance adequacy and equity and has been applied frequently in litigation. His analyses of the economic impact of school outcomes have entered into the design of both national and international educational policy.

“It is rare that a policy-shaping book about education reform is written jointly by a lawyer and an economist," said Mr. Lindseth. “This book draws upon our experiences with education, appeals to the general public, and addresses the educational concerns of our nation."

The book has been endorsed by William J. Bennett, former U.S. Secretary of Education; Jeb Bush, former governor of Florida; and Roy Romer, chairman of Strong Schools America, former Los Angeles school superintendent, and former Colorado governor; among others.
