ATLANTA and WASHINGTON (October 22, 2009) – Sutherland Asbill & Brennan LLP announces it has appointed Thomas H. Warren as the firm’s Sustainability Partner. Early this year, the firm formally announced its firmwide sustainability initiative to significantly reduce waste and promote conservation of energy and resources. The firm’s Sustainability Partner is charged with holding the firm accountable to this commitment.
“Tom has been a key leader in the firm’s sustainability initiative from its inception as a grassroots movement," said Managing Partner Mark D. Wasserman. "In addition to his personal commitment to sustainability, Tom understands how our clients are impacted by these issues based on his representation of both renewable energy developers and large energy corporations responding to climate change."
Mr. Warren will continue to work with the multidisciplinary Sustainability Committee to identify and implement sustainable practices across the firm and to promote how each member of the firm can do one thing differently to build a more sustainable culture, both inside the firm and within our communities.
“I am excited to lead the firm’s efforts to adopt more sustainable business practices," said Mr. Warren. “We are constantly looking for new ways to reduce our impact on our environment, and I look forward to continuing to assist my clients and colleagues with the daily sustainability issues that impact us and our businesses."
Mr. Warren, a partner with Sutherland’s Energy and Environmental Practice Group, focuses his practice on energy transactional matters including energy trading, mergers and acquisitions, and project development. He works primarily in the electric power and liquefied natural gas (LNG) industries. As co-leader of the Renewable Energy Practice, he counsels clients on all aspects of renewable energy project development. Recently, he counseled an energy company on the acquisition of two wind farms and assisted another energy company with a power purchase agreement for a waste-to-energy plant.
Sutherland has committed to become a leader among law firms in establishing environmentally sustainable business practices. The firm’s Sustainability Commitment charges all employees to promote environmental sustainability throughout the firm; cooperate with clients, vendors and other law firms in achieving sustainability goals; and encourage individual leadership and initiatives to reduce waste and promote conservation of energy and resources. The firm is a leader in the ABA-EPA Law Office Climate Challenge and an EPA Green Power Partner. Click on the following link to learn more about Sutherland’s Sustainability Commitment.
Some of the firm's sustainability accomplishments to date include:
Purchasing renewable energy certificates (RECs) from firm client Sterling Planet, representing 100% of Sutherland’s estimated annual electricity use. These certificates represent electricity that has been generated by a renewable source. The firm has been recognized by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency as a member of its “Green Power Partnership" for its efforts to reduce the risk of climate change through green power purchasing.
Reducing paper usage and using 30% post-consumer waste recycled copy paper and letterhead in all of its offices. All employees are encouraged to print materials two-sided. In 2008, Sutherland reduced its use of paper holiday cards by 75% through the implementation of an electronic holiday greeting.
Adopting energy efficiency measures, including energy-efficient lighting and temperature settings. Other steps toward energy efficiency include reducing the number of printers and reducing time for printers and computers to switch to “sleep" mode.
