WASHINGTON (July 29, 2002) – Sutherland Asbill & Brennan LLP announces the addition of Michael J. Murphy as a consultant to the firm's tax practice. Mr. Murphy, the former Executive Director of the Tax Executives Institute (TEI) and before that IRS Deputy Commissioner, will be resident in the firm's Washington office.
At TEI, Mr. Murphy was responsible for overall administration of a professional association of 5,700 senior corporate tax executives representing approximately 2,800 of the largest companies in the United States, Europe and Canada. He was recently recognized by federal officials from both the United States and Canada for his outstanding support for tax administration, and by TEI in recognition of his nearly ten years of service to that organization.
Mr. Murphy began his career with the IRS in 1962 as a revenue agent in Milwaukee and rose through the IRS's management ranks to become Deputy Commissioner in 1987. As Deputy Commissioner, Mr. Murphy was the IRS's highest-ranking career official, with responsibility for the day-to-day management of the agency. Mr. Murphy was Acting Commissioner of the Internal Revenue from March to July of 1989.
"Many of us have had a long relationship with Mike through TEI and other professional activities. We are just delighted that he has chosen to work with our tax team," stated Jerome B. Libin, firmwide chairman of Sutherland's Tax Group.
