ATLANTA (August 1, 2007) – Sutherland Asbill & Brennan LLP announces, David E. Wigley,Ph.D. has joined the firm's highly regarded Intellectual Property Practice Group as Counsel resident in the Atlanta office. Dr. Wigley will focus his practice on securing, maintaining and enforcing intellectual property rights for companies in the United States and around the world.
Having earned a Ph.D. in Chemistry, Dr. Wigley's legal work involves the chemical, pharmaceutical and life sciences sectors. He has prepared and prosecuted patent applications, developed opinions regarding patent validity and infringement and provided counseling and due diligence involving these issues.
The addition of Dr. Wigley brings the number of attorneys in Sutherland's Intellectual Property Practice Group to 49. Within the IP group, 26 attorneys are members of the U.S. Patent Bar, 6 have Ph.Ds, 14 have masters degrees and one has an MD. Among Sutherland's 49 IP attorneys, 7 have degrees in biological sciences; 14 have degrees in chemistry, chemical engineering or petroleum engineering; 8 have degrees in electrical engineering, computer engineering or computer science; and 5 have degrees in mechanical or civil engineering.

A graduate of The University of Arizona College of Law, Dr. Wigley was a member of the Arizona Law Review and was named Outstanding Oral Advocate of the First Year Moot Court. Prior to practicing law, he was a faculty member in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Arizona for 15 years, where he directed a research group investigating the diverse aspects of synthetic and catalytic inorganic, organometallic and materials chemistry. He was also a visiting faculty member at the California Institute of Technology.
Dr. Wigley earned a B.S. in Chemistry and Soil Science from Mississippi State University and a Ph.D. in Chemistry from Purdue University. He conducted post-doctoral research at MIT and The University of Oxford.
