WASHINGTON (June 7, 2000) – Sutherland Asbill & Brennan LLP is pleased to announce that Paul D. Jacokes has joined the Washington office as a partner in the Tax Group. Mr. Jacokes' practice will focus on the tax issues associated with complex financial transactions and products.
Mr. Jacokes joins Sutherland from the Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corporation, where he served as Assistant General Counsel. In that capacity, Mr. Jacokes advised Freddie Mac's Corporate Finance division on a broad range of tax matters relating to its mortgage and non-mortgage investments, issuances of debt and stock and hedging activities. Mr. Jacokes has extensive experience with the taxation of interest rate, foreign currency and other types of financial derivatives, the taxation of mortgage-backed and asset-backed securities, and tax issues affecting dealers in securities. From 1984-1988, Mr. Jacokes served as Legislation Counsel to the Joint Committee on Taxation of the United States Congress, where his responsibilities included legislation affecting the taxation of financial instruments.
Mr. Jacokes received his J.D. from Yale Law School and his Master of Laws in Taxation from Georgetown University Law Center. He received his B.A., with highest honors, from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, where he was a member Phi Beta Kappa and a Jackson Distinguished Scholar. Mr. Jacokes is a member of the District of Columbia Bar.
