August 9, 2006

WASHINGTON (August 9, 2006) – Sutherland Asbill & Brennan LLP has announced that Marguerite C. Bateman, Managing Director of the Independent Directors Council (IDC), will join the firm's Financial Services Group as partner, effective September 11, 2006.

Ms. Bateman will practice from the firm's Washington, DC office, focusing on the representation of mutual funds, mutual fund boards of directors, and investment management organization in areas such as mutual fund regulation, fund governance and best practices, and compliance matters.

The IDC is the leading forum serving the mutual fund independent director community in advancing the highest standards of fund governance.  Ms. Bateman has served as the IDC's Managing Director since its inception in 2004.  Under her leadership, the IDC has offered programs to educate mutual fund directors about the requirements of federal securities laws and areas of developing regulatory interest and coordinated the development of positions by directors on matters of policy.  Ms. Bateman is an authority on matters of fund governance and, as such, is frequently quoted in leading publications.  Prior to her position at the IDC, Ms. Bateman was a senior attorney at the Investment Company Institute (ICI) for ten years, handling a wide range of industry issues.

"As Sutherland continues to expand its financial services practice, Marguerite's addition will greatly enhance the firm's investment management practice," said Stephen E. Roth, Chair of the firm's Financial Services Practice Group.  "Her experience in working with mutual fund boards of directors and mutual fund organizations will be an asset to the firm."

Managing Partner Mark D. Wasserman added, "Sutherland has experienced significant growth in its financial services practice in recent years, hiring accomplished lawyers such as Marguerite to expand key practice areas.  Marguerite's experience will be of tremendous value to the firm and to our clients as we continue to deepen our financial services practice."

The comprehensive and nationally recognized Financial Services practice at Sutherland offers highly developed experience across the complex financial marketplace.  "I'm excited to join such a well-regarded financial services practice as Sutherland's," said Ms. Bateman.  "The firm has a premier practice, and I believe that my many years of experience working with the investment management and fund director community will be an advantage to both this practice group and the firm's clients."
