Cynthia Krus Named “Community Leader of the Year" by Bread for the City

September 28, 2011

WASHINGTON (September 28, 2011) – Local nonprofit Bread for the City will honor Cynthia M. Krus, Sutherland Asbill & Brennan LLP Partner, on October 6, 2011, as “Community Leader of the Year" for her years of extraordinary service to the organization.

Serving the Washington, D.C., community, the nonprofit encourages collaboration among clients, volunteers, donors and staff. Their shared goal is to provide food, clothing, medical care, and legal and social services to those who seek assistance at Bread for the City. Ultimately, they aim to foster their clients’ social, emotional and spiritual lives.

“It is my honor to name Cynthia as the Community Leader of the Year at our upcoming ‘Good Hope Awards’ ceremony," said George A. Jones, Bread for the City Executive Director. “We sincerely appreciate the myriad ways she helps the agency fulfill its mission, including encouraging Sutherland’s involvement, which generates monetary and pro bono support to sustain our operations."

Ms. Krus plays an integral leadership role at Bread for the City. As a member of the board of directors and its executive committee, for instance, she has chaired the successful “Art with a Heart" signature fundraiser for four consecutive years. Last year’s record-setting event raised more than $300,000, a feat made possible in large part due to Ms. Krus’ vision and leadership.

As a firm, Sutherland has committed to serve Bread for the City in numerous ways, including launching the rooftop garden project—part of the firm’s sustainability initiative—and committing volunteers for monthly maintenance. The food gleaned from the garden helps feed the many who come through the nonprofit’s doors. The firm also contributed to the construction of their new health care center, assists with holiday meal deliveries, and supports a legal fellow.

“Cynthia has shown constant dedication to Bread for the City and its mission," said Managing Partner Mark D. Wasserman. “Because of her personal devotion to the organization, Sutherland has become integrally involved in a wide range of the group’s vital activities. There is always more work to do, and we are honored to lend our support to help Bread for the City serve people in need throughout the D.C. area."
