WASHINGTON (August 8, 2001) – Sutherland Asbill & Brennan LLP is pleased to announce that tax partner Herbert N. Beller has been named Chair-Elect of The American Bar Association Section of Taxation. Mr. Beller will serve as Chair-Elect until August 2002, when he becomes Chair. The firm has enjoyed a history of leadership within the ABA Tax Section since the section was founded in the 1950s. Mr. Beller will be the fifth Sutherland partner to head the ABA Tax Section.
Through its nationwide membership, numerous committees and Washington-based staff, the ABA Tax Section serves as a major provider of continuing legal education for tax lawyers and other tax professionals. The Section engages in tax-oriented public service activities and interacts with the Internal Revenue Service, Treasury, the congressional tax writing committees and other governmental agencies on matters relating to the tax system.
Mr. Beller earned his law degree, cum laude, from Northwestern University School of Law, and is also a CPA. He has practiced federal tax law in Washington since 1969, with emphasis on corporate and other transactional tax planning, tax controversies, IRS National Office representations and exempt organization matters. He taught corporate tax courses for many years at Georgetown University Law Center, has authored numerous articles on corporate tax and other tax subjects, and served from 1993-96 as Editor-in-Chief of The Tax Lawyer. Mr.Beller previously was a Vice-Chair and Council Member of the Tax Section, and served as its Liaison to the AICPA and as chair of its Committees on Government Submissions and Closely-Held Corporations. He currently sits on the National Conference of Lawyers and CPAs and the Board of Regents of the American College of Tax Counsel.
