The National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) and the S Corporation Association (S-CORP) released a study showing that S corporations average higher effective tax rates than other business entities. According to the study, S corporations and partnerships have the highest average effective tax rates, at 31.6% and 29.4%, respectively, with C corporations (17.8%) and non-farm sole proprietorships (15.1%) averaging lower rates.

NFIB and S-CORP pointed to the study as evidence that focusing solely on corporate tax reform—a proposal floated last week by President Obama—will not address the needs of small business owners and individuals. That sentiment was echoed in a brief release posted on the House Ways and Means Committee "Tax Tracker" website, which cited the study as an example of the need to "make the tax code simpler and fairer for all, not just some, job creators."
