In politics, it's never too early to think about the next election. In particular, two upcoming Senate races could have an outsized effect on the prospects for comprehensive tax reform. House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Dave Camp (R-MI) is reportedly considering the open-seat Senate race in Michigan. Rep. Camp is also pushing for Congress to pass comprehensive tax reform before the end of 2014. While tax reform may be popular, being identified as the candidate who wants to make changes to popular, but costly, deductions (including mortgage interest and charitable gifts) could be risky for Rep. Camp.

At the same time, Senate GOP Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) seems to be facing a very tough reelection battle in Kentucky. His primary challenger is Matt Bevin, a well-funded Louisville businessman. The likely Democratic candidate, Kentucky Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes, is currently staying close in polls (and is even leading in some). A time-consuming re-election race could make negotiations on any tax reform plan even more difficult for Sen. McConnell.
