Norwegian engineering firm DNV has announced advanced designs for offshore natural gas pipelines that could compete with floating LNG liquefaction projects, so-called FLNG projects. According to World Gas Intelligence, the new design thins the pipeline's walls by 25-30% compared with traditional designs for extreme underwater depths, allowing the pipelines to compete with FLNG projects to monetize gas deposits located far offshore.
