Local citizens and state leaders last night attended the first of four public hearings sponsored by FERC regarding the draft environmental impact statement (DEIS) for the proposed Broadwater LNG terminal in Long Island Sound. Some attendees expressed concern that the facility would endanger public safety and the environment and would disrupt other commercial and recreational uses of the Sound. Others, however, said that the terminal would help decrease energy costs, which could promote employment stability in the region. Newsday and The Courant provide local coverage.

The Courant reports that Connecticut State Sen. Andrea Stillman (D-Waterford), the vice chair of the state’s Long Island LNG Task Force, described the DEIS as inadequately researched. In response to a request by State Sen. Leonard A. Fasano (R-North Haven), Chairman of the LNG Task Force, FERC has agreed to a meeting with Connecticut state agencies and officials on Tuesday to discuss the project. FERC’s notice may be found in the e-Library in Docket No. CP06-54.
