The Powell River Peak (British Columbia, Canada) published an op-ed piece that argues that the BC should not permit LNG tankers to transit the Strait of Georgia, because the use of natural gas conflicts with the province’s “green plan” as it encourages dependence on a fossil fuel. In addition, the piece suggests that there is a strong case that the Strait of Georgia is not suitable for LNG tanker traffic.

Separately, the Peak also published a response from WestPac LNG to a letter previously published by the paper that was critical of the company’s LNG proposal. The response notes that LNG is not explosive and that numerous potential hazards, including spills and earthquakes, will be considered in a comprehensive risk assessment completed by the project.
