The New York Times yesterday reported on concerns about availability information regarding the safety of the proposed Broadwater terminal. Some local communities argue that they cannot make a decision about the terminal because of federal Critical Energy Infrastructure Information (CEII) regulations that shield energy infrastructure from terrorism. Conn. Attorney General Richard Blumenthal said that the “broad and sweeping secrecy of this information…proves the point that security and safety are at risk in this project.” Access to CEII documents requires the recipient to sign a non-disclosure agreement, but Blumenthal “would rather not have the information if it means muzzling and censuring what we can say to the public.” Broadwater representatives maintain the facility is safe, and point out that all major infrastructure projects are subject to similar protective measures.
