Using 2000 US Census data, The News Journal estimates that 94,388 people live within 0.8 mile of the Delaware River shipping channel that would serve LNG tankers headed to proposed terminals in New Jersey or Philadelphia. The News Journal also estimates that 161,000 people live within one mile of the shipping channel, and 720,000 within two miles. The newspaper’s numbers represent the total number of people along the transit route, rather than the number of people who would be affected by an LNG incident at any given location on the route. Comparing its numbers to populations near other terminals, The News Journal found that the total population along the Delaware River route is much larger than the total populations along existing LNG tanker routes in Massachusetts and Maryland. However, it noted that the population density near the Massachusetts terminal is greater than at any point along the Delaware River.
