Local politicians in Calais, Maine have expressed support for the Calais LNG terminal, which is being proposed by the Passamaquoddy Tribe in cooperation with Cianbro Inc., a large construction and construction services company. In its endorsement of the facility, the City Council cited the need for alternative sources of energy and economic benefits such as tax revenue and new jobs. “The development of an LNG terminal in Down East Maine would provide substantial employment opportunities for our distressed area while providing business access to a new, more economical alternative, and cleaner form of fuel for residential and commercial application alike,” Mayor Vinton Cassidy said in a letter addressed to the Calais LNG Operations Committee. The terminal would be built on the St. Croix River, directly across from Bayside, New Brunswick. Friday’s Bangor Daily News has the details. [Print edition only]
