The Long Beach Press Telegram reports that the City of Long Beach has given Sound Energy Solutions until close of business today to commit a minimum amount of money to the city’s General Fund. SES Director Thomas Giles received a March 7 letter from Long Beach Gas and Oil Director Christopher Garner asking for “a very substantial increase from its original proposal” to ensure negotiations continue. Giles questioned the timing of the letter, which arrived after nine months of ongoing negotiations, and one month before the mayoral election. “Other than the election season going on, I have no idea why this timing is so urgent,” he said. When contacted by the Press Telegram, City Manager Jerry Miller expressed frustration at the lack of progress in achieving direct financial benefits for the Long Beach community. “I don’t think there is a reason to negotiate at this point in time,” he said. “I am extremely pessimistic about reaching a satisfactory conclusion.” SES has predicted financial benefits through increased tax revenue and added jobs, but the city is asking for a direct cash contribution.
