At a meeting held last night to solicit comments on the final environmental impact statement issued for Freeport-McMoRan Energy’s proposed Main Pass Energy Hub LNG project, several opponents expressed concern with the terminal’s open-loop design, which they said poses a threat to aquatic life. David Landry, Freeport-McMoran’s vice president and general manager, said that the open-loop system presents fewer risks because it will draw water from greater depths where, he says, there are fewer fish. However, a spokesperson for the Coastal Conservation Association said that it is difficult to determine what species will occupy that area at various times of the year.
