The projected increase in construction of LNG tankers over the next five years has the shipping industry concerned about the dwindling number of officers and crew qualified to operate LNG vessels. A shortage of well-trained seafarers is detrimental to the LNG sector at large, according to Stephen Van Dyck, chairman of INTERTANKO. “We’ve always said that you can have millions of dollars of equipment, but without the people, you don’t have anything,” says Van Dyck. Industry insiders say that the shortage may be due to a recent trend favoring criminal liability for shipping accidents, and to the lack of cadet programs at shipping companies.
