A councilmember of Port Hueneme, Calif. challenges BHP Billiton President Renee Klimczak’s assertion that the proposed Cabrillo Port LNG facility is necessary to allay California’s energy predicament. Citing data provided by the DOE’s Energy Information Administration, Murray Rosenbluth says that “domestic natural gas production will increase approximately 20 percent in the next 20 years” to help meet the projected increase in consumer demand, and argues that increasing reliance on foreign sources of energy will hurt the U.S. economy. Conflicting views on California’s purported need for LNG can be reconciled by requiring the California Public Utilities Commission to hold evidentiary hearings under oath, Rosenbluth says. The opinion piece is published in today’s Ventura County Star. [Free registration required]
