Freeport-McMoRan has announced that the U.S. Coast Guard has accepted the company’s amended application for its Main Pass LNG terminal proposed for offshore Louisiana. The modified application reflects changes in the project’s original design, which was rejected by Louisiana Gov. Kathleen Blanco in May due to the proposed use of open-rack vaporizers to regasify LNG. The Times-Picayune today reports that the Coast Guard will not require Freeport-McMoRan to begin anew the regulatory process; instead, the agency will conduct an environmental evaluation of the revised project, which now features closed-loop technology. As a result, a decision on the amended project may be issued by the end of the year.
