The August 19 Bangor Daily News reports on uncertainty surrounding the construction of a new, government-funded boat launch at Split Rock on the Passamaquoddy reservation. Spokespersons for the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Rural Development program, which provided $150,000 for the project, and Maine’s Small Harbor program, which provided $50,000, indicated that the terminal developer and the tribe are expected to repay the funds if the boat launch is removed to accommodate the LNG terminal. In response to concerns over a potential conflict, Quoddy Bay LNG’s project manager Brian Smith said that “it appears that most of our facilities are on the northern part of Split Rock and would not interfere with a boat launch the tribe is building south of Split Rock.”
