The Baltimore Sun today reports that Maryland officials have decided not to renew an Oct. 2004 agreement permitting shipyard Barletta Willis to dump dredged material at Hart Miller Island. Transportation Secretary Robert L. Flanagan said that the decision not to extend the contract, which is set to expire in January 2007, is partly an attempt to thwart AES’ plans to build an LNG terminal near Baltimore. Critics of the LNG proposal have expressed concern that AES may receive federal approval more readily if a shipping channel already exists at the proposed terminal site in Barletta Wills’ shipyard.
