American Bar Association and the American College of Employee Benefits Counsel

Sutherland Partner Steuart H. Thomsen is speaking at the Health and Welfare Benefit Plans: Responding to Change Conference, October 15-16, 2007, in Virginia. Stuart's presentation, titled "Ethical Considerations in Health and Welfare Benefit Plans," will address the principles of legal ethics and rules as they apply to issues such as the selection of providers or networks, financial incentives and disclosure, the scope of covered treatment and confidentiality of patient information.

Sutherland Partner Carol A. Weiser is also speaking. Carol's presentation, titled "Making Your Plan Documents Work for You and Not Against You," will provide tips for drafting plan documents and summary plan descriptions, including whether to use one document or two and addressing plan sponsor and fiduciary concerns, based on her experience and the latest case law.

The Health and Welfare Benefit Plans: Responding to Change Conference is sponsored by the American Bar Association and the American College of Employee Benefits Counsel. The Conference will educate participants on new and pending litigation, including proposals regarding health savings accounts (HSAs), the status of subjugation after Sereboff, updates on state pay or play laws, strategies for employers regarding retiree medical benefits, avoiding discrimination pitfalls for wellness programs, a new role for on-site medical clinics and ethical issues in health and welfare plans.
