World Research Group 6th Annual Patents & the Financial Services Industry Conference
Sutherland Partner Malvern U. (Griff) Griffin is speaking at the World Research Group 6th Annual Patents & the Financial Services Industry Conference, July 28-29, 2009, in New York, New York. Griff is part of a panel that will be discussing Best Practices for Patent Prosecution & Engaging the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office.
Prosecuting cases in the USPTO’s Technology Center 3600, specifically in the finance and banking art units (3691-3694), is a challenge for those involved. Awareness of the internal procedures followed in these art units, the increasing complexity of cases today and the continuous latency in processing applications have all contributed to the challenges involved in prosecution.
This session will focus on: overview on prosecution for financial services patent filings, including why certain patent filings experience "lag time," and statistics and trends at the USPTO; changes and nuances in prosecuting before the USPTO in the financial services space, with specific emphasis on the evolution of patent prosecution this year in light of Bilski, Cominsky and Niujten; best practices and strategies for improving patent prosecution in the financial services sector; expedited examination as it relates to patent filings in the financial services space; and examination consistency or not? Board of Appeals case studies and audience engagement.
Sutherland is also a proud sponsor of this conference. This year’s event addresses critical and timely issues facing the financial industry regarding patents and patent reform, recent case law, including the Bilski decision, and the responses to the challenge of doing more with less in today’s economic environment.
